French

“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.”

At St John Vianney Catholic Primary School we provide the children with valuable, social and cultural experience. We feel it is important to foster a positive ethos which promotes bilingualism. Here at SJV, the children will develop their communication skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing/grammar) in French through engaging activities. We firmly believe that learning a new language will broaden the children’s horizons and their perspective on the world.

Intent

The intention of the Foreign Languages curriculum at St John Vianney Catholic Primary School is to provide the children with valuable, social and cultural experience. With a large Polish community and a growing Romanian community at our school, it is important to foster a positive ethos which promotes bilingualism. Here at SJV, the children will develop their communication skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing/grammar) in French through engaging activities. We firmly believe that learning a new language will broaden the children’s horizons and their perspective on the world.

Implementation

The weekly teaching of French is undertaken by Class Teachers, using ‘Language Angels’ – an interactive scheme of work and resources which provide our children with a relevant and exciting curriculum. A dynamic long-term program of work has been outlined for each year group, ensuring that the children access a wide variety of topics and that their foreign language knowledge progresses as they move through Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. In addition to this, the children also enjoy learning about other European countries and their language and culture.

Impact

The children will be able to communicate with each other in French; read and listen to words/phrases or short passages and show an understanding of what they have read and write words/phrases or short passages with appropriate grammar. The children will broaden and deepen their cultural knowledge of France by learning about famous French people, French festivals and traditions.
